Summertime in Parkland is a little slower and simpler than other times of the year. Gone are the “Sorry I forgot to tell you I have a school project due tomorrow” projects, and the dinner, practice, homework juggle. School is out, families are traveling and things just seem less urgent. Although the summer days are lazy, there are some really great things to enjoy.

There are numerous summer camps offered throughout the city of Parkland. There is a camp for every interest. For instance there are dance, baseball, tennis, and equestrian camps. Additionally there is a travel camp for middle schoolers and so much more.To learn more about city run camps please visit

Parkland Library

Parkland Library

The city of Parkland has its own city-run Library. Visiting the library and enjoying all it has to offer is a great way to kick off your summer reading and to escape from the south Florida heat. In addition to books, it offers a large selection of classes, discussions, groups and programs for our youngest to our oldest residents. Additionally, it has a permanent 9/11

World Trade Center artifact exhibit. Parkland is very lucky to have this library. For more information please visit the Parkland Library website.

Volunteer

Volunteer

Summer is a great time of the year to volunteer. Parkland is a super community service town. We love our town and each other, so we love getting involved and helping each other. As a result there are many opportunities to volunteer throughout the summer. Additionally, summer is a great time for students to complete their service hours and projects. Here are some volunteer opportunities.

  • City of Parkland: The city is always seeking volunteers to assist at their special community events.

  • Project Grow Love: Project Grow Love is the garden located in front of Stoneman Douglas High School. The garden was created out of love for and to honor the shooting victims on February 14, 2018 by MSD teacher Ronit Reoven and her student, Victoria (Tori) Gonzalez, who was also Joaquin Oliver’s girlfriend. The volunteers who care for the garden meet monthly.

  • Parkland Buddy Sports: Parkland is blessed to be home to the Parkland Buddy Sports program. This organization offers sports programs for children and young adults with special needs and many opportunities for students.

  • Parkland Horseman Association: The Parkland Horseman Association is always looking for volunteers to assist in preparing for and working at shows. Additionally, they may provide you with the names of local horse rescues and farms who need volunteers.

flamingo pool float

Float in a pool

Whether you have your own pool or live in a neighborhood with a community pool, Parkland offers endless opportunities to just float in a pool. There are few things as refreshing and relaxing as spending time with family and friends in a pool. After a busy, hectic and crazy school year, we all deserve a little time to just float. I love summer in Parkland. Life just seems to slow down during this part of the year and it gives us an opportunity to recharge our batteries.
